Got My First Kill

Well, at least she has crossed out the dead on the poster.

Oh dogs is mom pissed.  Let me tell you my side of the story first.  Mom gets home late and lets me outside.  I take care of my business and go to my favorite place to sniff around which is Dad’s tractor.  Mom notices me smelling all around it with my ears perked and my tail raised high.  She comes over to investigate and sees what I can smell.  She tries to bribe me off by saying let’s go in for treats. I just ignore her.  She tries again treat, treat let’s go in.  I start to go I really do but then I catch something out of the corner of my eye and I was on it like white on rice.  Mom is screaming drop it Sully DROP IT which I did immediately.  I thought she would be proud of me I killed my first rabbit. OMD was I wrong!  She is screaming at me calling me a bunch of HBO names.  My feelings were hurt; my ears, my head, and my tail were hanging low. I didn’t understand what I did and I thought this should have been a joyous occasion with some atta boys and good job Sully.

Now here’s Mom's side of the story:
Sully is right I did arrived home late but it had nothing to do with him murdering a little rabbit.  He is also right I saw the rabbit and I did try to bribe him with treats to get him to go inside but here is where the story changes.  I tried my hardest to not let him catch sight of the rabbit but he was in the zone sniffing, smelling and not hearing a damn thing I had to say.  He grabs the rabbit in his big ass jaws of death and I can hear the baby crying.  OMG a crying rabbit is a horrible sound and it was ripping at my heart.  I was screaming DROP IT and chasing him around the yard.  He finally drops it and the little rabbit is gasping for air so I picked him up.  I won't lie, I was crying at this point and praying to God to let this rabbit take its last breath because I could see its insides and I didn’t want it to suffer or be the one who actually had to kill it. I felt the little one take its last breath and I was thankful.

I have forgiven Sully.  I know Sully isn’t a vicious dog; his instincts just kicked in and took over.

Sully mate, you did absolutely what any good pawlice occifer must do in the line of duty - and it ain't always purty. Do you have a pawlice after-care occifer to bark to in case of PRDT (post rabbit deadifying trauma)?

[Sully's mum... do YOU have a PRDT counsellor?! Looooong ago in the wilds of a Suffolk (UK) garden, our little pet rabbit was got by a friend's golden lab... I just relived that moment and can feel your shock. It was 50 years ago... sigh...Yxx]

  3. Awe, I know this must have been so hard for you. I would have cried, too. Glad the little bunny is at peace now.

Of course, Sully was just following his instincts, but still sad for the bunny.

  4. Our angel Loki had similar experience with a bunny. The Man had to deal with it. I am fortunately that when Phod catches things he doesn't hurt them and will drop them and they run away. I guess I am also fortunate that if Hailey catches something, it doesn't have time scream. She is a quick and efficient hunter.

  5. Oh boy. I don't know if this Terrier can congratulate you on your first....well, you know...without getting in trouble from two moms - yours and mine. I once caught a baby rabbit as well but I did not get to sink my teeth in before Ma made me drop it. It was okay and ran off. Ma couldn't stand how it cried...it was terrible. I was very proud of myself (at first) and then felt just like you. We cannot help it...it is our natural instinct.

  9. I feel your pain Sully's Mom. As a Scottie parent I to have stood in your shoes. It is a cry you never forget. It is very upsetting for me to see Mommy rabbit build her nest right where my Boys can get to them easy.

  10. Our mom would be bawling too but they just have to understand that our prey instinct makes us do it. So me and my brother will give you high 5 paws!

  12. Kaci and Kali aren't allowed outdoors without leashes. We have ground squirrels, rabbits (five nests) and lizards. The peeps feel the same way your mom does.

  14. Oh Sully, you just let your instincts take over. I know you didn't mean to hurt that poor rabbit. We do tip our tails to your on your first kill. But our kills do bother our parents. You have to balance you need to chase and catch with how it makes your mom feel. It is hard

  16. We have to admit Sully, we're quite proud of you on your first kill. I Lily Belle, am a great hunter. Yup, caught many a squirrel and chipmonk. But when Mom yells release, I drop it immediately. But dang, I am so proud of myself.

Now as far as Mom goes, we know just how hard it is on the hoomans. It's horrible. But we always tell our Mom, it's a part of the circle of life.

Living in Florida now we're on to bigger things here like snakes. You can always tell when one is around because you can hear our Mom scream all the way to Timbucktoo!

    Hugs,
    Lily Belle & Muffin

HECK SAKES... if you had pawsessed a couple of THUMBS... you would have picked it up gently and Carried it around and showed it off and then... put it back down.
YEP.... WE ARE PROUD OF YOU... YOUR MOM should have it MOUNTED and displayed fur you.

  20. It's so tough when their instincts kick in. Dogs are predators but it's really hard not to get mad at them when they kill innocent little animals. I'm so sorry that you had to go through this. Hugs.

  21. Oh Sully how very sad. I know if I chase a bunny Lee is going to be mad mad mad. They leave me those itsy bitsy raisins that I love to eat. The bunny is at the Bridge enjoying some green grass there.
    Thanks for being a friend

  22. Oh how sad (mom says) I think it's terrific. I once killed a kitten, that is, it wasn't dead so mom and dad drove to the vet in the middle of the night so the vet could euthanize it. They couldn't do it them selves :/

  23. My pup unfortunately has a problem with finding bunny nests as well. Part of their instincts, just sad when it happens:(

  24. Sully I got a job for you. You can come an kill a hawk since you dead things. I had a hawk swoop down on me last week and he took a piece of my skin to eat. Dam thing! I want him dead not alive. I got to go back to the vet tonight because of him.
